Lofoten Photo Tour
Norway: Lofoten Fantastic Fjords 2018

Join us on this Lofoten Photo tour of the Norwegian Lofoten archipelago. Lofoten is known for a distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. The landscapes, seascapes, villages, mountains, cliffs and fjords make for breathtaking photo ops. With a tiny bit of luck we will even photograph the Aurora Borealis – the northern lights.

Itinerary of Lofoten Photo Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Lofoten

You will arrive during the day, by plane or boat/ferry in Svolvær although this way of travelling will mean that you arrive in Svolvær quite late. Better to come a day earlier. The flight from Bødo to Svolvaer takes around half an hour. We will pick you up and transfer you to our accommodation on the seafront in Svolvær. In the early evening we meet for introductions a trip briefing and one wonderful welcome dinner.

Dinner and overnight in the Svolvær

Day 2: Svolvær and Austvåg Island

2nd Day of Lofoten Photo tour we will explore Svolvær and eastern part of Lofoten; Laukvik, Raftsundet, Digermulen etc. A key feature are the impressive flakes where row after row of cod hang to dry. Located in an area comprising sea, derelict houses, fishing docks and sea birds, this is a very rich area for photography. Following dinner we leave for an evening to midnight road trip on north side of the Austvåg Island to photograph the sunset in some of the beautiful bays and inlets.

Dinner and overnight in the Svolvær

Day 3: Scenic Drive to Reine

3rd day of Lofoten Photo tour we will set out for Reine where we will spend our next four nights. An early stop is Henningsvær fishing village situated at the foot of Mount Vågakaillen. Consisting of a group of isles and islets spread out at random in the blue waters of the Vestfjord there can be perfect reflections of the bay with a mountain backdrop to make for some special images. We lunch in a small traditional cafe in the village Unstad. The remainder of the short journey to Reine will be punctuated by several photography stops for this road is one of the most scenic in the whole of Norway. No doubt we will stop in Hamnøy, a tiny idyllic fishing village surrounded by mountains that reflect dramatically in the sea. Hamnøy is right next to a ‘drive-in bird cliff’ like a crack in the rock where the calling Kittiwakes echo between mountain walls. After settling into our accommodation at Reine we take an evening photographic stroll around this fascinating area.

Dinner and overnight in the Reine

Day 4: Birds, Boats and Caves

Sunrise comes early at this time of the year and there are some spectacular images to be had overlooking Reine or indeed right from the front veranda of our accommodation! Late afternoon of 4th day of Lofoten Photo tour we leave by boat from Reine for a photographically inspiring trip around the southern tip of Lofoten; our destination the caveat Refsvika. On the way we will pass abandoned fishing villages and sail through Moskenesstraumen (The Maelstrom) a system of tidal eddies and whirlpools, some of the strongest in the world. The current attracts whales, seals and white-tailed eagles. Upon landing we walk along the coast to the Kollhellaren cave with 3000-year-old wall paintings. The cave is 50 metres high and reaches 115 metres into the mountain, it is quite magical. The beach below the cave is very scenic in the late evening sun. The boat trip and walk around six hours.

Dinner and overnight in the Reine

Day 5: Midnight Cruise Reine Fjord

5th day of Lofoten Photo tour we will wander around at the local area or for some picture editing and individual tuition. After lunch we join the ferry in Reine for a trip across the fjord to Vindstad. From here it’s easy walking around the village or along the fjord. There are lots of traditional houses and sea birds. For the energetic there is walk across a low ridge to the interesting Bunes beach (Bunesstranda) on the north-west side of the island. We return by boat to the Reine fjord surrounded by jagged mountain peaks in time for sunset and dinner in a local restaurant.

Dinner and overnight in the Reine

Day 6: Flakstad

On 6th day of Lofoten Photo tour will be spent in and around Reine. perhaps revisiting locations of interest. In the afternoon we drive North to Flakstad. Located near the southern end of the Lofoten archipelago, Flakstad comprises all of the island of Flakstadøya and the northern part of the island of Moskenesøya. The islands are connected by the Fredvang Bridges and the Kåkern Bridge. The large lake Solbjørnvatnet lies on the northern part of Moskenesøya in Flakstad. This is a most striking area with mountains framing the classic white sand of Skagsanden beach. To the left of the beach are interesting rocks and to the right is Flakstad church. Lake Solbjørnvatnet is often home to Black Throated Divers. If the weather is fine we will enjoy an evening BBQ on Skagsanden beach.

Dinner and overnight in the Reine

Day 7: Nusfjord, Eggum and Svolvær

On 7th day of Lofoten Photo tour We will start our return journey to Svolvær after breakfast. We will take a different route including the scenic fishing village at Nusfjord one of Norway’s most authentically preserved fishing villages. After lunch we will board our Zodiac and head out to the magnificent Trollfjorden a dramatic steep sided fjord. This was once a busy fishing harbour due to it’s protection from the prevailing winds and weather. Troll Fjord is famous for the Battle of Troll Fjord which took place here in 1880. Dean J. Tatooles

Chicago-based photographer, Dean J. Tatooles, is the owner and operator of Southern Cross Galleries Photo Safaris. In his professional career, Dean has specialized in landscape and wildlife photography and indigenous portraiture. His travels have taken him across all seven continents multiple times.

Dean works primarily with Nikon digital SLR equipment to capture his wildlife images and indigenous portraits and a Linhof 617 S III Technorama medium format panoramic camera to produce his majestic landscapes. At a young age, Dean became fascinated with the topography, culture and wildlife of certain locations in the Southern Hemisphere. In that spirit, he created Southern Cross Galleries after the constellation that bears its name and is only visible from below the Equator. His hope is that his work touches that sense of adventure in everyone and that viewers of his photographs will be transported to another time and place, even if it’s for just a moment.

As owner and operator of Southern Cross Galleries Photo Safaris, Dean in conjunction with his global partners, has lead photo tours all across the globe. The world is his workplace and Dean is eager to share his passion for photography with others whenever he can. Southern Cross Galleries Photo Safaris’ photo tours are always small and intimate –with rarely more than six to eight guests on a given trip. Wherever possible, mass tourism and the norm are avoided, opting for the more “off the beaten path” locations. Dean understands that light and timing are everything in creating that perfect photo and makes sure to have his guests in the right place at the right time to maximize opportunities. Accordingly, scheduling is flexible and his tours adapt constantly to conditions on the ground. Dean is happy to have many return guests over the years and hopes that you will choose to travel with us on your next adventure.
